Independence

Turnaround promotes independence and self-reliance through outdoor adventure, challenging activities and education.
We promote independent living skills by:
- Utilising the opportunities created by the most ordinary aspects of day-to-day living.
- Employing a ‘life-space approach’ acknowledging the unique opportunity workers who share the lives and living spaces with our young people have.
- Encouraging participation in the day to day running of the home.
- Involving young people in decision making about their own lives.
- Managing their own pocket money, clothing allowance and small budgets in the semi-independent home.
- Offering appropriate levels of support and role modeling the behaviour we expect.
- Creating opportunities for work experience or involvement in mainstream provision and community programmes.
- Organising periods of free time where appropriate, building up trust.
- Reinforcing their right to complain and supporting an individual with this process.
- Consulting with young people about their education and learning styles to create a bespoke programme that is stimulating and engaging.
